Things to do

Mysterious ruins, observation towers, churches, and a landscape threaded with streams, brooks, and rivers – this is the Bystřice region. The nearby castle is Pernštejn, a Gothic stronghold famous from fairy-tale films that, unusually, lies 100 m below the town (hence the name – Bystřice nad Pernštejnem means “Bystřice over Pernštejn”).

For a family-friendly outing, explore Fairy-Tale Alley, follow the Zubří Trails, and visit Bystřice Miniature Park which features scaled-down models of castles and chateaux from the surrounding area. The defining feature is a large statue of a bison by Michal Olšiak.

Whether you’re getting around by bike, on foot, by car, or on horseback, you can explore the castles of ZubštejnPyšolec, and Aueršperk, visit the ancient stone Saint Michael’s Church in Vítochov, or take in the scenery at the Vír Reservoir. For breathtaking views, don’t miss the Karasín Observation Tower.

Just a few kilometres from Bystřice, you’ll find Šiklův Mlýn, the oldest Western-style town in the Czech Republic, with attractions and entertainment for the whole family.

Not far away, the increasingly popular Draxmoor Haunted Castle promises a spine-tingling experience.

About 15 km from Bystřice lies Nové Město na Moravě, home to the Vysočina Arena, which hosts the Biathlon World Championship and mountain biking competitions. The town also boasts a ski slope with artificial snow in winter and an extensive network of cycling and hiking trails in summer. Several other ski resorts are within easy reach, including Nový Jimramov, Dalečín, and Olešnice.

Take the kids for a walk to Devět skal or Toulovcovy Maštale and discover the beauty of the Vysočina region.
